Calvin Ridley lost 15 pounds in 24 hours and Chipotle is taking the blame

The Titans wide receiver opened up about a brutal offseason stomach bug. The fast-casual burrito chain has not been linked to any Cyclospora outbreak, but here we are.

Tennessee Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley had a rough offseason — and not because of training camp.

At a recent media session, a reporter asked Ridley about a 24-hour stomach bug he dealt with during the offseason. 'Oh, yeah, I did,' Ridley said. 'I've actually had that a couple of times in my life; maybe three or four times. It's not a good thing. It's like a 24-hour thing, but it really puts you down pretty good.'

The number that stood out: Ridley said he lost around 15 pounds in just 24 hours. That is a lot of burrito bowl.

When reporters followed up — because gastrointestinal distress is apparently a beat now — they asked whether the culprit was lettuce, a nod to the Cyclospora outbreaks that have been making headlines. Ridley pointed to a meal from a fast-casual Mexican chain known for burritos, burrito bowls, and customizable protein-rice-topping combinations. The description fits Chipotle, which Voltage has reached out to for comment.

Here's the thing: Chipotle has not been linked to any of the Cyclospora incidents currently circulating in public health reports. That is worth saying plainly, because the internet has a short memory and a long appetite for food-scare narratives.

We do not know the actual source of Ridley's illness. He is doing better. He is gearing up for his third season with the Titans. The story, such as it is, ends there.

Voltage take: The real story here is not the burrito. It is the reflexive pattern — athlete feels sick, reporter asks about the food, a brand absorbs reputational splash before any facts are established. In a media environment already running hot on Cyclospora hysteria, the jump from 'stomach bug' to 'fast-casual Mexican chain' to implied culprit happens faster than the algorithm can fact-check it. Chipotle is a publicly traded company. Its stock moves on headlines. Ridley himself did not accuse the chain of anything — he recalled a meal. That distinction matters, and it tends to get lost somewhere between the tweet and the take. Free enterprise includes the right not to be tried by press conference.
